Mixed Media & The Sketchbook

Mixed Mediums

Mixed Media
While oil painting remains my primary focus, my creative practice extends across multiple mediums, including watercolour, gouache, and graphite. Each offers a unique way to convey mood, texture, and emotion. I especially love exploring these mediums in my sketchbooks, where I can experiment freely, capture fleeting ideas, and develop compositions in an intimate, unfiltered way. This collection highlights my ongoing journey through mixed media, where exploration and expression go hand in hand.

The Sketchbook
For an artist, a sketchbook is a personal and creative safe space—a place to explore ideas freely. It’s a time-honored practice, whether doodling, refining details like noses, or sketching landscape compositions. Nearly every piece begins here. My sketchbooks are usually for my eyes only, but for those curious about the artistic process, they offer insight into how ideas take shape.

You may recognize some sketches from my finished paintings. This is where I work through composition before committing to a larger piece. If a sketch feels strong, I might develop it further with a color study—perhaps in gouache or as a petite original oil.

I’ve always found other artists’ sketches to be beautiful works of art in their own right. We’re fortunate that many great artists preserved their drawings, offering a glimpse into their creative minds. Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt, Vincent van Gogh, Jean-Louis Sauvat, and E.H. Shepard are just a few whose sketches continue to inspire and teach us.
